Oklahoma State Senator Shane Jett, along with the Oklahoma Freedom Caucus, has introduced legislation to memorialize slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The proposals include Senate Bill 1188, designating October 14 as Charlie Kirk Free Speech Day, and Senate Bill 1187, requiring every public university in Oklahoma to build a Charlie Kirk Memorial Plaza featuring statues and permanent tributes. A concurrent resolution would also honor Kirk as a “martyr for truth, faith, and the First Amendment.” Additionally, Senator Ally Seifried has filed a separate resolution recognizing Kirk’s legacy, following an earlier push by the Oklahoma GOP to declare September 10 a state holiday in his memory. This comes on the heels of a GOP-backed resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives, which sparked controversy after Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Kirk’s rhetoric as “ignorant” and divisive. In this episode, we break down the political, cultural, and legislative impact of these proposals, the national debate over Kirk’s legacy, and what it reveals about free speech, faith, and partisanship in America today.
